Google Stadia 5G Game Streaming: The Disruptive Effects of Cloud Gaming

Based upon a recent livecast at Openwave, it is predicted that by 2022, up to half of all of the 5G data traffic could come from Google Stadia 5G gameplay and its competitors in the cloud gaming industry. This news comes after our recent analysis of how cloud gaming could actually give 5G data a purpose.

The renowned Openwave event included representatives from a number of the biggest network providers, including those from Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange. These operators—and a number of other large mobile providers—are said to believe that the upcoming introduction and promotion of cloud streaming could use between a quarter and a half of all mobile 5G data.

The opportunity of Google Stadia 5G gameplay will have significant impact on the gaming world as we know it. Traditionally, mobile devices have had to suffer with a database of poor quality, uninteresting games—but the introduction of streaming could take mobile gameplay to a whole new level. Should it be available worldwide, the 5G data network will easily be able to facilitate the internet connection speeds required for such a high-resolution gaming experience as we see in Assassin’s Creed, and other top-class AAA games.

Will Google Stadia 5G Gameplay Be Popular?

The effects of Google Stadia 5G gameplay cannot be predicted fully at present, with the current conclusions being based largely upon presumptions. We do not yet know how popular Google Stadia will be among the gaming community, especially those who are loyal to their console devices.

Furthermore, it is unclear how many people will actually take up the opportunity of Google Stadia 5G gaming on their mobile device, as such will be limited only to those places where 5G is available (considering that some areas still struggle to get 4G data).

Along with that, the act of streaming Google Stadia 5G games will consume large amounts of mobile data. At present, data companies are able to charge an arm and a leg for their mobile internet services, with prices being much, much higher than for a standard wireless connection. Unless individuals invest their hard-earned money in expensive unlimited data contracts (at present, it is predicted that only around 20% of individuals have unlimited data plans), it is a sad fact of life that for some, Google Stadia 5G gameplay may be reserved, on mobile, to a few hours of playtime a month.

Google Stadia 5G: A Warning To Networks

Regardless of whether or not the use of Google Stadia 5G gaming ends up being commonplace or not, the network providers are said to be expecting quite the significant increase in data traffic (they’re on board with the idea, then) and are warning one another to prepare for such an eventuality.

President and CEO of Openwave Mobility, John Giere, said, “The recent emergence of cloud gaming platforms including Google Stadia, Apple Arcade, Microsoft xCloud and Snap Games has not escaped the attention of the operator community. Over-the-top players have ambitious plans to become the Netflix for gaming, hosting libraries of thousands of instantly accessible games that, ultimately, will consume three to four times the amount of bandwidth on 5G networks, compared to standard definition video traffic. Needless to say this will impact mobile operator data strategies.

Indeed, despite the news of Stadia’s release still being just a month or so ago, gamers are gearing up to make the most of the opportunity and Google Stadia 5G gaming could well assist them in this quest. Evidently, it is therefore critical that mobile network providers have a serious think about how they plan to provide the necessary bandwidth requirements to support such intensive use of the existing provisions.
